Every neurological diagnosis changes more than one life.
It affects the person receiving it, but also the parent, partner, child or friend who quietly steps in to help carry the weight. These are the unpaid carers. And in Australia, there are over 3 million of them. (Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2022)
Many are supporting loved ones living with neurological conditions, from rare genetic conditions to degenerative disorders. Their role is critical and too often, it’s invisible.
What Does It Mean to Be a Carer?
It means showing up daily, even when you’re exhausted.
It means learning new medical language, navigating appointments, managing medications and juggling responsibilities most never see.
It means the emotional labour of holding hope, managing worry and offering strength when someone else can’t find theirs.
Neurological conditions can be especially complex. They don’t just affect the body, they affect communication, cognition, mobility, memory and mood. That means carers are often managing layers of care including physical, emotional, mental and logistical… all at once.
The Impact on Carers
While carers give so much, the cost is high. Many report:
- Emotional burnout
- Chronic stress and anxiety
- Financial hardship, especially if they reduce paid work to care full-time
- Social isolation, feeling that no one truly understands their day-to-day life
And yet, most receive little recognition or support.
These are not paid healthcare workers. These are ordinary people who become extraordinary caregivers out of love, necessity and commitment.
Why It Matters to The Homer Hack
At The Homer Hack, we’re not just here to fund research into rare neurological conditions. We’re here to support the real people behind those diagnoses, and that includes the families and carers doing the everyday work of love and care.
Our research helps bring better treatments, earlier diagnoses and more understanding of how these conditions impact people’s lives. But we also advocate for:
- Holistic care models that include carer wellbeing
- Mental health support for carers and families
- Community connection, so no one feels alone
- Events and resources to help carers feel seen, valued and supported
Because supporting someone with a neurological conditions shouldn’t mean losing your own health and identity in the process.
