When you hear the words “neurological condition”, many things might come to mind: physical symptoms, doctor visits and medical jargon. What often goes unspoken, but affects so many, is the emotional toll that comes hand-in-hand with these conditions.
New data reveals around 65% of people with neurological conditions report mental health struggles alongside their physical symptoms (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2024). This isn’t just a statistic, it’s a deeply human experience that touches every part of a person’s life and the lives of their families.
Living with a neurological condition means waking up every day not knowing what your body will do, or how your mind might respond. Physical symptoms can be unpredictable, but the emotional weight of anxiety, depression, frustration or grief often feels heavier and lonelier.
Many people tell us they feel invisible, especially when their mental health challenges aren’t understood or acknowledged. The stigma around mental health can add another layer of isolation to an already difficult journey.
At The Homer Hack, we want you to know that you are seen. Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health. Your feelings are valid and support is possible.
Why The Homer Hack Exists
Our charity was founded because we believe every person living with a rare neurological condition deserves more. More understanding, more hope and more resources. We focus on rare conditions linked to the HOMER1 gene and similar, but our vision is far-reaching.
Here’s how we work to bring light into what can feel like darkness:
1. Funding Research That Sees the Whole Person
We don’t just fund science that looks at physical symptoms. We support research that investigates how neurological conditions impact the brain’s emotional and cognitive functions. By understanding this connection, treatments can improve quality of life, not just physical ability.
2. Building a Supportive Community
One of the most powerful things we hear from families is how isolating rare neurological condition can be. When symptoms are invisible or misunderstood, people often feel alone. We’re committed to fostering a community where stories are shared, experiences are validated and nobody has to face their journey in silence.
3. Advocating for Change and Access
Mental health care should be an integral part of neurological condition treatment. We advocate for the healthcare system to recognise this need, pushing for better access, earlier support and holistic care models that treat the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
A Message of Hope
We know this journey can be overwhelming. There are days filled with uncertainty, pain and exhaustion. But there are also moments of courage, resilience and connection.
The Homer Hack is here to walk alongside you, funding the research that can bring breakthroughs, building communities that offer belonging and pushing for a future where no one feels forgotten.
If you or someone you love is living with a neurological condition, remember this: You are not alone. Your mental health matters. And together, we can create a brighter, kinder future.
Join us in making that future possible.
